Su, 2022
The Photography Series is called “Su”, meaning “water” in Turkish. “Su” was an appropriate name for this project to connect the artwork to my cultural background, and to the sea that I love but also fear. The series is developed as an artistic journey to seek beauty in one of my biggest fears - drowning while submerging myself into the water.
It was important to connect with water in person and surrender myself to the waves to face the fear of being alone in the water and the fear of drowning. The intention of the work was to find peace and beauty in it. The endless blue, that is dominantly present in the work, is the source of my personal fear - being isolated in the middle of the sea. Feeling hopelessness and vulnerable. There is nowhere to go, no one to help. Waves are crushing down on you. The sky is turning grey. Lightning. Thunder. There is nothing but you and the water. The fate of your life depends on being rescued, otherwise you will drown.
I have decided to focus on colour as the main narrative tool, because I am interested in the use of colour to create an emotional bond between the art and the viewer. Through this specific cold hue of blue, I wanted to reflect on my emotional journey; starting from a fearful mindset and transitioning into a state of acceptance, connection, and finally, peace.
With this artwork, I want the viewer to experience the beauty and affection of the sea and the natural connection of people with it.
